Amazon has told staff they must return five days a week – but experts don’t all
agree that flexible working cuts output
Four years ago when the world of work was upended by the Covid pandemic,
confident predictions were made that a permanent shift in remote working would
follow the removal of lockdown restrictions.
Much has clearly changed since. Some of the earliest preachers of the brave new
teleworking world – including the US tech companies Google and Microsoft – are
among the most vocal to repent.

Ruling is a fillip for European Commission efforts to clamp down on ‘sweetheart’
tax deals
* Business live – latest updates
Apple has lost a high-profile, €13bn (£11bn) Irish tax battle with Brussels in a
decision that will bolster the European Commission’s efforts to clamp down on
favourable “sweetheart” tax deals for multinationals.
The European court of justice (ECJ) ruling, which had been eagerly awaited,
comes after years of legal wrangling over whether the European Commission was
right to demand in 2016 that €13bn in “illegal” tax breaks for Apple should be
repaid because it gave the iPhone maker an unfair advantage.

DoJ accused tech giant of more monopolistic behavior a month after judge found
it illegally cornered online search
A second antitrust trial pitting Google against the US Department of Justice
began on 9 September, with a federal judge in Virginia hearing opening
statements over whether the tech giant illegally monopolized the digital
advertising industry. The case could have far-reaching implications for Google’s
primary source of revenue as well as the tech industry and online publishers.
The long-awaited trial is the second major US antitrust suit against Google,
after the company lost a landmark case last month that determined the company
illegally monopolized the online search industry. Unlike in that trial, the
justice department is seeking specific remedies in its second case, ones that
would force Google to break up parts of its business and divest some of its
advertising technology.

US elections 2024
There are signs the billionaire is becoming unpopular with the very demographic
group most likely to buy EVs
Elon Musk has long flirted with rightwing politics, and delights in pushing an
image of himself as a contrarian showman. Yet in recent months the billionaire’s
political allegiances have started to raise a question for Tesla, the company
that he built into the world’s largest electric carmaker: just how far can he go
before customers start to abandon his products?
The German pharmacy chain Rossmann was one of the first to put its head above
the parapet this week. The family-owned company announced that it would not add
to the 34 Teslas in its company fleet because of Musk’s endorsement of Donald
Trump for US president.

TUC insists fight will go on after GMB fails to secure right to represent
retailer’s staff by just 29 votes
* Business live – latest updates
The TUC has insisted the battle for union recognition at Amazon will go on,
after workers at the US retailer’s Coventry warehouse rejected the right to
collective bargaining by a majority of just 29 votes.
In a historic ballot that could have forced Amazon to recognise a union for the
first time in the UK, 50.5% of the workers who voted chose to refuse the
proposal for the GMB union to represent them. If 15 had switched sides it would
have gone the other way.
